Duke School Teaching Fellows Program

Duke School firmly believes in inclusion and belonging in all aspects of school life, whether you are a student, teacher, or member of our community.

With this core piece of our school’s mission in mind, we launched the Duke School Teaching Fellows Program in the 2022-23 Academic Year. Our Fellows program serves as a natural extension of our work in connecting students to the community and the material they are learning by enabling them to see themselves reflected in the makeup of faculty and staff, helping ensure success among members traditionally of underrepresented groups in schools. 

Our teaching method is a model for public and other independent schools both locally and nationally. Duke School’s unique student-centered, project-based, integrated curriculum continues to adapt to suit a variety of learning styles. For the past 76 years, we have been the leading progressive, independent school in the area, and our teachers are well-known for their work partnering with children throughout their educational journey. They are regarded for their expertise in project-based learning and student-centered curricula. 

Our Fellows Program seeks candidates from populations underrepresented in independent schools who have a record of a solid commitment to and demonstrated interest in working with children through progressive education. In addition, the Fellowship welcomes those who have recently graduated from undergraduate and graduate programs and individuals seeking a career change.

The Duke School Teaching Fellows Program will run for a one-year term, with the School having the option to extend the Fellowship for a second year. Each Fellow will work alongside mentors, engage in strategic observations of classrooms, attend professional development workshops and conferences, and co-lead and lead classrooms. In addition, we will focus on evidence-based teaching strategies that advance student learning and engagement.
